SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN & VULNERABLE ADULTS Presented by Simon Langford

Members of the whole dental team are in a position where they may observe the signs of child abuse or hear something that causes them concern about a child. The General Dental Council (GDC) states that the dental team have an ethical responsibility to be aware of local procedures for child protection and vulnerable adults.

Aim: This course aims to update participants on issues relating to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

MANAGEMENT OF MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN DENTAL PRACTICE
Presented by Phil Jevon

The aim of this course is to update delegates on current guidelines in the management of medical emergencies in general dental practice with an emphasis on CQC Compliance.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of:

• Risk management in medical emergencies
• The correct use of oxygen cylinders
• The ‘ABCDE’ approach for dealing with emergencies
• Management of common medical emergencies
• The role and use of Automated External Defibrillators
• Emergency equipment and Drug requirements

• Describe strategies to minimise and manage risks


WHAT’S NEW IN INFECTION CONTROL?
AN OVERVIEW OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN INFECTION CONTROL IN DENTISTRY

The sterilisation of dental handpieces has never been short of controversies in dental practice. This session will provide an overview of current standards linked to steam sterilisation and an in-sight into recently published research investigating steam sterilisation of dental handpieces, providing an evidence base for safe practice.

ORAL CANCER: AN UPDATE FOR PRIMARY CARE PROFESSIONALS
Presented by Philip Lewis

Aims:
• increase awareness of the presentation, diagnosis and management of malignant oral lesions
• highlight and review oral potentially malignant conditions
• review the referral process
Objectives:
• recognise suspicious signs & symptoms
• demonstrate good knowledge of conditions associated with malignancy
• understand referral pathways and follow-up protocols
• outline important pathological features

RADIOGRAPHY AND RADIATION PROTECTION
Presented by Brenda Murray

The aim of this talk is to provide a case-based update on image diagnosis and interpretation. The factors affecting diagnosis will be explored. Radiographic features that are key to aiding interpretation will be presented. These areas will be re-enforced using cases with 2D and 3D (Cone Beam CT) imaging.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course participants should understand
• The factors affecting image diagnosis
• Radiographic anatomy on intra-oral and panoramic radiographs
• The radiographic features indicative of benign and malignant disease
• How to reach a differential diagnosis based on the radiographic features
